Describe a kind of food people eat during special event.

You should say:

• What the food is

• What event people usually eat it

• How it is cooked

• And explain why it is for the special event.

You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

I’d like to talk about tangyuan, or sweet glutinous rice balls, a quintessential Chinese delicacy savoured during the Lantern Festival – the vibrant final day of Lunar New Year festivities. These bite-sized treats have a soft, chewy glutinous rice flour wrapper enclosing rich, sweet fillings, most commonly black sesame paste, crushed peanuts, or red bean paste. To cook them, people first knead glutinous rice flour with warm water into a smooth, pliable dough, portion it into small balls, press a concave well in the centre to stuff with filling, then roll and seal the balls before boiling them until they float to the surface. The main reason it’s tied to this special event is its profound symbolism: the perfectly round shape and the name "tangyuan" sound nearly identical to the Chinese word for "reunion", so it embodies wishes for family cohesion, harmony, and good fortune in the coming year. Many families still make tangyuan together on the festival eve as a cosy, meaningful bonding ritual.
