Describe a law or regulation about environmental protection.

You should say:

• What it is

• How you first learned about it

• Who benefits from it

• And explain how you feel about this law or regulation

You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

I’d like to talk about China’s 2020 Single-Use Non-Degradable Plastic Ban, a nationwide environmental regulation targeting plastic pollution reduction. It prohibits retailers like supermarkets and convenience stores from offering free non-degradable plastic bags, and bans single-use plastic straws and cutlery in dine-in catering services. I first learned about it during a summer grocery run in 2020, when the checkout clerk told me free plastic bags were no longer available, and I later looked up the full policy text on the Ministry of Ecology and Environment’s website for a school environmental science assignment. The main beneficiaries are the general public, as less plastic waste cuts microplastic contamination in food and water supplies; waste management departments also benefit from reduced landfill pressure. Marine ecosystems stand to gain too, as fewer plastic items leak into oceans and harm wildlife. I think this regulation is remarkably forward-thinking. While it caused minor inconvenience initially, it’s effectively shifted public awareness of plastic overuse, and I’ve seen far more people carry reusable bags now, which is really encouraging.
