Describe A new skill you learned when you were a child
Describe a new skill you learned when you were a child.
You should say:
• What the skill was
• Who taught you this skill
• How you learned it
• And explain how you felt about learning the skill
You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
When I was around 7 years old, the new skill I picked up that left the most vivid impression was traditional Chinese paper-cutting, a folk craft I’d always found mesmerising whenever I saw my grandma make decorative pieces for Spring Festival. My grandma, a deft paper-cutting enthusiast with decades of experience, was my patient tutor. She started me off with safety scissors and simple symmetrical patterns like little peony flowers, guiding my hand to fold the red paper evenly before making cuts. As I progressed, I moved on to more intricate designs such as zodiac animal motifs, though I often messed up tiny notches at first. Instead of scolding me, she emphasised that trial and error was a natural part of mastering the craft. After about two months of weekly practice, I could create a complete window flower entirely on my own. Learning this skill felt incredibly rewarding. At first I was easily frustrated when my designs turned out lopsided, but nailing a complex piece gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. It also boosted my fine motor skills and taught me to be more patient, and I still feel nostalgic whenever I dig out my old paper-cutting works now.
