Describe A time when you encouraged someone to do something that he/she didn’t want to do
Describe a time when you encouraged someone to do something that he/she didn't want to do.
You should say:
• Who he or she is
• What you encouraged him/her to do
• How he/she reacted
• And explain why you encouraged him/her to do it
You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
A memory that immediately springs to mind is when I persuaded my introverted childhood friend Mia to sign up for a regional amateur storytelling competition three years ago, an opportunity she was initially desperate to turn down. Mia has always had a phenomenal gift for weaving imaginative tales, but crippling stage fright meant she avoided any scenario that required her to speak to an audience of more than 10 people. When she dismissed the competition out of hand, I sat her down to walk through the low-stakes nature of the event: it was designed for hobbyists, judges were supportive, and even if she stumbled, she would walk away with a free workshop pass as a participation reward. After three days of gentle nudging and agreeing to attend every practice session to give her constructive feedback, she finally relented. To her astonishment, she took home the first runner-up prize, and now hosts a weekly storytime slot at her local library. I pushed her to apply because I knew her talent deserved a wider platform, and I hated to see her hold herself back due to unfounded anxiety. The whole experience reinforced how small acts of encouragement can unlock someone’s hidden potential.
