Describe a time when you felt proud of a family member.

You should say:

• When it happened

• Who the person is

• What the person did

• And explain why you felt proud of him/her

You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

One of the moments I felt overwhelmingly proud of a family member was two years ago, when my 72-year-old grandma published her first collection of poetry. My grandma has been obsessed with writing ancient Chinese poems since she was a teenager, but she never dared to share her work with people outside our family, as she was worried others would mock her for being a rural woman with no formal literary training. During the 2021 lockdown, she had plenty of spare time at home, so she sorted out over 100 poems she had written over the previous 60 years, and with my cousin’s help, she submitted the collection to a small independent publishing house. We were all stunned when the publisher agreed to print 2,000 copies. I felt immensely proud of her because she chased her lifelong dream regardless of her age and others’ potential judgments, which proved that it is never too late to pursue what you are passionate about. Her book even became a local bestseller in our hometown later, and I still keep a signed copy on my bookshelf as a constant reminder to be brave with my own goals.
