Describe A time when you gave advice to others
Describe a time when you gave advice to others.
You should say:
• When it was
• To whom you gave the advice
• What the advice was
• And explain why you gave the advice
You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
Three years ago, I offered tailored advice to my cousin Lin, who was on the verge of quitting her first job as a marketing executive due to overwhelming work stress and constant conflicts with her team leader. First, I suggested she stop making impulsive decisions immediately, and instead document all her work contributions and the specific issues she encountered with her supervisor for two weeks. I also advised her to schedule a formal one-on-one conversation with her leader to express her struggles and ask for clearer task guidelines, rather than resigning right away. I gave her this advice because I knew she had poured enormous effort into landing this role at a top FMCG company, and quitting without trying to resolve the issues would be a huge waste of her previous efforts. Later, she followed my advice, her leader adjusted her workload, and she even got a promotion six months later. This experience taught me that thoughtful, practical advice can make a real difference to people's lives.
