Describe A time when you made an important decision

NEW Sep-Dec 2026🏃 Experiences

Describe a time when you made an important decision and were happy with the result.

You should say:

• What the decision was

• Why you made the decision

• How easy it was for you to make the decision

• And explain why you were happy with the result

You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Well, the most pivotal decision I’ve made in recent years was turning down a guaranteed postgraduate recommendation at my domestic university to pursue a Master’s in Sustainable Development at a Scottish institution, right after my undergraduate final year. I made this call because I’d spent two summers running rural environmental education workshops in southwest China, and realised my home university’s programme was overly theoretical, whereas the Scottish course offered hands-on community placement modules that aligned perfectly with my goal of working in grassroots sustainability. It was fairly challenging to decide: the recommendation was a safe, low-risk option, and my parents initially hesitated about me moving abroad alone. I spent three weeks weighing up pros and cons, and chatting with my former project mentor before committing. I’m thrilled with the outcome because I gained tangible skills like community needs assessment, and landed a role as a project officer at an international environmental NGO right after graduation — exactly the career path I’d envisioned. I also connected with a network of like-minded practitioners, which has been invaluable for my work.
