Describe An advertisement with a famous person
Describe an advertisement with a famous person in it.
You should say:
• Who the person is
• Where you can see it
• What the advertisement is about
• And explain how you feel about the advertisement
You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
I’d like to talk about a compelling advertisement featuring Dame Emma Watson, the globally renowned British actress and gender equality advocate, for the outdoor apparel brand Patagonia. I first stumbled on it as a pre-roll ad on YouTube last year, and it’s also been circulated widely on Instagram Reels and Patagonia’s official website. The 90-second ad is part of Patagonia’s “Worn Wear” sustainability campaign: Watson wears a frayed 12-year-old Patagonia fleece she’s owned since university, walks viewers through small repairs she’s had done over the years, and explains how fast fashion fuels massive textile waste that clogs global landfills. Instead of pushing new product lines, it encourages customers to mend old gear or buy second-hand from the brand’s resale platform. I find it incredibly authentic and impactful, because Watson has long been a vocal environmental campaigner, so she doesn’t feel like a random celebrity paid to endorse a product. Unlike most glossy, aspirational ads, it actually shifted my mindset – I’ve started mending my own old jackets instead of replacing them. It’s easily one of the few celebrity ads that’s stuck with me long after I first saw it.
