Describe An exciting book you enjoy reading
Describe an exciting book that you enjoy reading.
You should say:
• When you read it
• What kind of book it is
• What it is about
• And explain why you think it is exciting
You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
I’d like to talk about Project Hail Mary, a gripping hard sci-fi novel I absolutely devoured last summer, when I was serving a mandatory 14-day quarantine after an overseas business trip. It falls into the hard sci-fi genre, meaning it’s anchored in rigorous, evidence-based scientific principles rather than vague, fantastical tropes. The story follows Ryland Grace, a mild-mannered junior scientist who wakes up with amnesia aboard a lone interstellar spacecraft, only to realise he’s the sole surviving crew member on a do-or-die mission to reverse a catastrophic solar dimming that threatens all life on Earth. Midway through, he forges an unlikely alliance with a spider-like alien named Rocky, who’s on a parallel mission to save his own dying home planet. What makes it so electrifying is the breakneck pacing, constant unexpected plot twists, and the way author Andy Weir weaves deeply plausible scientific problem-solving into every high-stakes scene. I found myself staying up till 2 a.m. most nights, completely unable to tear myself away because I was desperate to know if they’d pull off their seemingly impossible mission.
