Describe An important river/lake in your country
Describe an important river/lake in your country.
You should say:
• Where it is
• How big/long it is
• What it looks like
• And explain why it is important
You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
I’d like to talk about the Yangtze River, without doubt the most vital waterway in China, which winds through 11 provincial-level regions across the country’s central and eastern territories. Stretching over 6,300 kilometres, it ranks as the longest river in Asia and the third-longest worldwide, with a drainage basin covering nearly one-fifth of China’s total land area. Its scenery shifts dramatically along its course: the upper reaches cut through steep, forest-cloaked gorges with turbulent, emerald-hued water, while the middle and lower sections meander across vast, fertile alluvial plains, with wider, calmer waters dotted with cargo vessels and small fishing skiffs. What makes it irreplaceable is its multi-faceted value: it supports 40% of China’s agricultural output via irrigation, serves as the world’s busiest inland navigable route for freight, and acts as a critical biodiversity hub housing hundreds of endemic species. It’s also widely regarded as the cradle of southern Chinese civilization, nurturing countless ancient settlements over millennia. Honestly, it’s hard to overstate its role in shaping China’s economy and cultural identity.
