Describe Learn a foreign language

Describe something that helped you learn a foreign language.

You should say:

• What it was

• What language you learnt

• Why you chose to learn that language

• And explain how this thing helped you

You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

One learning tool that completely transformed my Spanish learning trajectory was a niche interactive podcast series called Coffee Break Spanish, which I leaned on heavily when I began studying the language three years ago. I chose to learn Spanish because I was planning a four-month backpacking trip across South America, and I wanted to move beyond surface-level tourist interactions to connect authentically with local communities; plus, as the world’s second most-spoken native language, it offered immense practical value for future travel and cross-cultural work. This podcast helped me in two key ways. First, its contextualised, scenario-driven lessons focused on real-life interactions like ordering street food or negotiating bus fares, meaning I could apply new vocabulary and phrases immediately instead of memorising decontextualised word lists. Second, its slow, enunciated native-speaker audio and targeted pronunciation drills helped me master tricky sounds like the rolled ‘r’ and Spanish word stress patterns, drastically boosting my speaking confidence and intelligibility. By the time I left for my trip, I could hold casual 10-minute conversations with locals, which made the whole experience far more immersive and rewarding.
