Describe One of your friends who learned a skill from someone
Describe one of your friends who learned a skill from someone (not a teacher).
You should say:
• Who he/she is
• What skill he/she learned
• How he/she learned
• And explain whether it would be easier to learn from a teacher
You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have 1 minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
The friend I’d like to introduce is Zoe, my childhood buddy who I’ve known since I was 5 years old. The skill she picked up from a non-teacher is traditional Su embroidery, and her tutor was her grandmother, a veteran folk artisan who has never worked as a formal school educator. She started learning when she was 12, spending every summer vacation staying at her grandma’s house in Suzhou. She began with basic techniques like threading needles and mastering simple stitches, and her grandma gave her immediate, tailored feedback whenever she messed up the pattern. After 4 years of consistent practice, she is now able to create delicate embroidery works featuring peonies and birds, which she even sells on small handmade product platforms. Regarding whether learning from a teacher is easier, I’d say a professional teacher might offer a more structured curriculum that speeds up progress for total beginners, but learning from her grandma gave her extra emotional motivation and exposed her to the stories behind this intangible cultural heritage, which a regular teacher might not cover.
