My all-time favourite city I’ve visited is Lisbon, the sun-dappled capital of Portugal, perched on the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula. I first stumbled upon it in a vintage travel documentary about European coastal hidden gems when I was 16, and its pastel-hued hillside neighborhoods immediately captured my imagination. I finally made the trip two years ago, during a gap year backpacking excursion around Southern Europe. What makes it my top pick is, first, its unpretentious, laid-back charm: winding cobblestone alleys open up to hilltop viewpoints called miradouros, where locals linger over frothy espresso and soulful fado melodies drift from dimly lit taverns. Second, its culinary scene is delightfully accessible yet sophisticated — I’d spend lazy afternoons sampling flaky pasteis de nata from century-old patisseries and charred grilled sardines at bustling street markets, all without breaking the bank. Even though I’ve explored dozens of more hyped European cities, Lisbon’s understated warmth and slow pace of life make it the only place I’ve ever felt instantly at home.
